Stereotypes: What are the ... like?

There are 4 videos to deal with (in 4 groups: one each)
- What are the Germans like according to the British?
- What are the Germans like according to the Americans?
- What are the British like?
- What are the Americans like?

Task 1: Your personal view
Before you watch the videos and listen to the interviewees answer the following questions yourself:
"What are the British like?"
"What are the Americans like?"
"What are the Germans like?"
Write down your answers in your exercise book, then share your answers with the other students in your group.

Task 2: Watch, listen and fill in the gaps - the videos and exercises
Watch the video assigned to (or chosen by) your group and fill in the gaps. For each video there are 2 different types of Hot Potatoes gap-fill exercises:

A: These gap-fill exercises are dictation-style and therefore quite a challenge.
The Germans according to the British (type A)
The Germans according to the Americans (type A)
The British (type A)
The Americans (type A)

Task 3: Summary and personal comment
Make sure you understand all the words and phrases used to describe the different nationalities, evaluate the statements and summarize the views (in writing): "The stereotypical German according to the British" etc.
Finish the summary by including your personal view on the statements - What was surprising? What was missing?

Task 4: Explanations
Watch the video again. Focus on the interviewees - on their age, their outward appearance, guess at their profession etc. Try to find out why these people think about the Germans, the British and the Americans the way they do. Choose one or two persons to illustrate your point.

Task 5: Creative Writing
Choose one person and write a short story about how and/or why (s)he has come to think about other nationalities the way (s)he does.

Task: Vocabulary
Practise the new vocabulary with HANGMAN EXERCISES and SHORT-ANSWER QUIZZES:

How the British describe the Germans (Hangman)
